Atlético de Madrid is one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football. Founded in 1903 by a small group of Athletic Club students living in Madrid, the team, nicknamed the ‘equipo colchonero’, has an extraordinary track record: 10 Leagues, 10 Cups and 2 Spanish Super Cups, as well as 3 European Leagues, 1 Recopa, 1 European Super Cup and 1 Intercontinental Cup. If that wasn’t enough, it has reached the Champions League final three times, twice under the guidance of its current coach, Diego Pablo Simeone, and is the favourite to win the Spanish League this season.
Athletico de Madrid has brought several great players up through the ranks, including Fernando Torres and David de Gea, who have played a key role in the national team at different times. The club’s youth team is currently one of the top teams in the Division de Honor Spanish youth league and the squad has a promising future ahead.
